Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany - Plot VIII Row E Grave 20 |
- Rheinberg is 24 kilometres north of Krefeld and 13 kilometres south of Wesel, in the locality of Kamp Lintfort, Nordrhein-Westfal. The cemetery is 3 kilometres south of the centre of the town of Rheinberg on the road to Kamp Lintfort. From the motorway 57, turn off at Rheinberg and at the T junction follow the 510 in the direction Kamp Lintfort. The cemetery is a short way along this road on the right. The site of Rheinberg War Cemetery was chosen in April 1946 by the Army Graves Service for the assembly of Commonwealth graves recovered from numerous German cemeteries in the area. The majority of those now buried in the cemetery were airmen, whose graves were brought in from Dusseldorf, Krefeld, Munchen-Gladbach, Essen, Aachen and Dortmund; 450 graves were from Cologne alone. The men of the other fighting services buried here mostly lost their lives during the battle of the Rhineland, or in the advance from the Rhine to the Elbe. There are now 3,326 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated at Rheinberg War Cemetery. 156 of the burials are unidentified. There are also nine war graves of other nationalities, most of them Polish. Source: http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/memorials/canadian-virtual-war-memorial/detail/2032664

| Barney Rynski - Crew members List of crew members on Barney's final flight.
As a Rear gunner in the RCAF on Lancaster PA977 with the 405 Squadron, Barney went on 35 sorties including Caen, Stuttgart, Kiel and Cologne. His final flight was on the night of December 22nd, 1944, flying over Bingen. Barney and his crew mates were to go on leave, but there was an urgent need to send out a plane on a mission; PA977 was the only one available. The plane was shot down; four died, three were captured. Barney's life, along with many other that served Canada, is honoured at the Rheinberg War Cemetery in Rheinberg, Germany. |

Notes |
- Changed his name to Barney on November 25, 1941.
Died while on a bombing mission over Germany. He was a Flight Sergeant. He was posted as the rear gunner on the mission.
Barney and his crew were on a day off before heading back to Canada after having completed 35 sorties. There was an urgent need for a "path Finder Crew" and no others were around. That was their last flight together; the plane was shot down over Germany.
